Allrounder Virago Boots by Mephisto : These Boots Were Made for Fast Walkin'
I'm a fast walker. A power walker, if you will. And I need footwear that allows my foot to roll along at a rapid pace. As much as I love and need the stability and cushioning I get from clunky shoes and boots, I'd like to lighten my load without sacrificing the other two features. After testing the Rebel shoe from Mephisto's Allrounder line, I knew I'd foundd a good match. So I was eager to try out the Virago boot, which looks very much like the Rebel. The two share a lot of important features: a Gore-Tex lining that makes the uppers waterproof (I walk in the rain, and I come home with dry feet!), a fast lacing system, top quality leather and natural rubber construction, a stability plate through the arch, and "Shock Absorber" heel cushioning. The Virago boots also seem to have the exact same rugged soles as the Rebel, with plenty of traction for wet, dry, and varied terrain. However, in a walking test, I found that the Virago has a more flexible sole through the forefoot than the Rebel. The result is a fast-moving boot that rolls from heel to toe with every step. The Viragos are also surprisingly lightweight. I like that fact that Mephisto reinforces the sides of the boot with a double layer of leather and has a rubber toe protector. Bottom Line: These well-built boots are ideal for urban walkers and light hiking on clear paths. Also available in a women's style called "Renegade."--E.D. (Dec.
