Chow Baby! The Travelers Guide to Cheap, Healthy Cooking : Chow Down

Canadian Chef Mike Hedley's new book, Chow Baby, is the perfect size to fit in a pack pocket. This great little book is chock full of simple recipes that you can make in hostel or motel kitchens, so you can spend less money on dining out and more on adventures.   I've done my share of cooking on the road while traveling on the cheap, and wish I'd had this book years ago. Hooray for moving beyond ramen and spaghetti with tomato sauce from a jar!

Hedley focuses on healthful ingredients that are usually easy to find in the most commonly traveled countries around the world. He also provides metric measurements as well as our standard North American measures, which will be helpful, for example, in most European countries.

And who says you have to be traveling to use this book?   I decided to try the hummus recipe in this book, which Hedley and his brother perfected over time while cooking at a restaurant in New Zealand. Mmmm, it was great and tasted better the next day when the flavors melded even more.

Bottom Line: Stuff this handy book in your pack or pocket on your next trip, and keep it handy in your kitchen at home.--J.I. (Jan 07)
