Columbia Challenger II Convertible Pant : The Only Pant You'll Need
I don't know why I held out for so long, insisting on wearing cotton pants and shorts for hiking. At least I've got the right gear now in Columbia's Challenger II Convertible pants. They're made out of a quick-drying, lightweight, breathable (i.e. wicking) material that's soft as cotton and even provides sun protection of UPF 30, I love them because they're so comfortable. With a partially elastic waistband, an athletic low rise, articulated pants legs, and a relaxed fit featuring a gusseted inseam, my Challenger pants (or shorts depending on my mood) keep me cool on hot day and allow me plenty of room to climb over fallen trees, scramble over large rocks, and even do a a bit of stretching when my pack gets too heavy. In the past, I"ve tried convertible pants that just didn't work as well as shorts (or vice versa). The Challenger pant legs zip off easily, leaving me with a 7.5 inseam shorts---not too short to reveal too much, not too long to cover too much. Getting out of the straight leg pants is made easier with ankle slits (that seal with velcro and a button flap along the bottom hem.) My favorite features, of course, are the roomy pockets: two attractively designed front pockets (mesh on the inside), two velcro-sealed cargo pants (one also has a zippered pocket on top of the main pocket), and a large zippered back pocket. (The pants fold up and fit in this back pocket, which converts into a pack able pouch. Better still, these pants come in lengths, so I can finally get a pair of outdoor pants long enough! Bottom Line: I can't think of anything else I'd want in this pant. I love the low-rise, inseam options, straight leg cut, and lightweight fabric. Also available in men's sizes/style.--E. D.
