Crumpler Whickey and Cox Camera Pack: You Can Take it All With You

As a wildlife and nature photographer who frequently travels, I was excited to discover the Crumpler Whickey and Cox backpack because it's designed to carry a full load of camera gear and a laptop.

It 's a tough, well-made, stylish pack, that allows me to keep all of my important gear close to me while traveling. I used to stuff my laptop into my checked bags and carry on my camera bag. Not an ideal scenario for my laptop, and I couldn't get any work done on the flight.

The Whickey & Cox pack solves my carry-on limit problem with its amazing organizational options. There are several segmented compartments to hold my camera, lenses, and accessories, plus a padded pouch for my computer. The compartments are separated by padded Velcro-attached inserts that can be moved to customize the pack to fit my gear. The laptop pouch can also be removed if I need extra space or don't need my computer with me. It's a heavy load when the pack is full, but the convience makes up for the weight. Plus, I can wear the pack on my back, which is easier than carrying it by hand.

Crumpler has made some excellent design choices with this versatilbe pack. The the bright orange interior makes it easy to find small pieces of camera gear, which are frequently black and difficult to find in many packs that have black interiors. It's a small thing, but a very nice detail. Also, there's a zippered mesh cover that keeps the camera gear snugly in its place; the laptop pouch can be stowed on top. A nice security feature of the Whicky and Cox is the zipper closure on the back of the pack. By deisgn, the pack can only be opened if you aren't wearing it.   If you have ever had someone take something from your pack in a busy airport while you were standing in line, you will appreciate this feature.

The pack is comfortable with wide , well-padded shoulder straps, with both a waist and a chest strap. It is designed to curve with your back. Even with a full load, it rode well without discomfort or imbalance. I found the 1000D nylon shell to be durable and scuff-resistant. I also like the gun metal/gray color, which is nice for urban travel and doesn't show dirt.

If I could add anything to this pack it would be more pockets.

Bottom Line: This pack is designed for the serious digital photographer who needs his (or her) camera gear and his laptop being with him at the same time. The backpack style makes it ideal for hauling heavy loads.   E.C. (Sept 07)
