Granite Gear Latitude Ki : For Serious Hikers

My first impression when I saw the Ki pack was "Wow, that's different.” Once I used the pack, I realized that what makes it visually unique also makes it highly functional. Granite Gear has taken a unique approach to creating a mid-sized backpack by using their expertise in compression to solve a lot of the problems I've suffered using traditional packs.

First, there’s Granite Gear’s front-loading system: a double-zippered stretch panel that runs the length of the pack for easy access. I can open up the bag completely to view its contents (and remove stuff sacks) without disrupting my packing job. Internal compression straps keep all my stuff in place while I find exactly what I’m looking for. I really appreciate this feature because with my old top-loading pack, I always had to dump it out and repack it to find anything.

Another bonus to Granite Gear’s design is the elimination of the lid, and the addition of side and top stretch pockets. I used to carry all my at-hand items, such as guide books, maps, a headlamp, and a compuass, in my pack’s lid. Unfortunately, that load sometimes make my pack more unweildly. With my Ki pack the outside stretch pockets are big enough to hold water bottles, jackets, and just about anything else I might need to access during a hike, yet because they're made of stretch material they stay secure and don't throw off the balance of my load. Additionally, the internal removable lid lets you keep items separate, but out of the way.

I was impressed with the Ki before my boyfriend and I left for our trip (and loved the fact that he was a bit jealous of my pack), but its performance on the trail really sold me on the brand and and the model.

The most outstanding thing about this pack is its ability to keep the load compressed and balanced over my hips. Everything about this bag is designed to tighten and anchor, from the internal and external compression straps to the stretchy center panel. I barely noticed I was carrying this pack; it moved with my body and never shifted to throw off my balance. Smart features, such as the reverse tightening waist belt, removable internal lid, and a hydration sleeve with port hole were surprisingly functional upgrades.

Granite Gear has done a great job of creating a women-specific pack (although anyone could use it). I noticed a lot less rubbing and soreness in the shoulders and neck area which I attribute to the narrower shoulder straps (these can be adjusted to the standard width as well). I was also surprised by how much gear I was able to fit in this 3900 cubic inch pack. Even after it was full, I was able to find places for a few last-minute items.

Bottom Line: All in all, this pack was extremely comfortable, functional and downright good looking. Now that I have the Ki in my life, my boyfriend wants to borrow it...but I'm not sure I can part with it.-H.P. (August '05)
