It occurred to me at my last yoga retreat that I might benefit from cleaning my mat, but I didn't want to use a cleanser containing harsh chemicals...(more... )

Hot Chillys MTF Micro-Elite Chamois Top and MTF Micro-Elite Original II Bottoms : Style, Comfort, and Quality

I've been around long enough to remember when base layers were called "long johns." They kept you warm, but they were bulky and binding.

So I was happy to discover Hot Chillys' body-hugging state-of-the-art base layers. These thin, lightweight tops and bottoms feel like silk and are rated for warmth factor. They're available in men's, women's, and children's sizes.

I was heading to the Sierra Nevada Mountains for some early winter snow photography, and wore my Hot Chillys MTF Micro-Elite Chamois top and and MTF Micro-Elite Original II bottom. Both were black in color and constructed with a Bio-Silver fabric designed to inhibit bacteria, fungus, and odor. (Also available in white and in granite.)

My first impression when slipping on this high-tech underwear was how easy it was to slip into and how comfortably it hugged my body without giving me that constrained feeling. The Chillys layers felt more like another layer of skin than garments. The turtleneck top has a zippered front that allows good venting. A tiny red chili dangles from the zipper pull which adds just a bit of spice to my backcountry adventures.

Hot Chillys come in various warmth factors from 6 to 10, with 10 being the warmest. The two items I tested rated at a mid-range 8.

Initially, the temps were in the mid 30's F; the Hot Chillys top with a light wind shirt provided adequate warmth. As temperatures dropped into the 20's F, additional layers of fleece under a good wind shell really made for a great combination.

This Sierra trip involved mostly short hikes, but often strenuous climbing because of the conditions. I never felt limited by the clothing, and was impressed at how efficiently the twin layer moisture managing fabric wicked moisture away from my body.   Even after exertion, I stayed warm, and my base layer never felt damp.

Bottom Line:   The Hot Chillys top and bottom far exceeded my expectations. They're stylish, durable, comfortable, and amazingly warm for their weight. With the Bio-Silver fabric, they should be a standard item in any pack or trail bag, especially if you are planning extended wear with limited laundry opportunities.   If you ski, cycle, hike, hunt, or work in cold weather, Hot Chillys has the perfect base layer for you.--E.C.
