Mountain Khakis Alpine Utility Short : For Heavy Duty Days

The trend in outdoor clothing leans toward fabrics that are high-tech, moisture-wicking, fast drying, and ultra light. In many instances I'm fully on board with that direction. That said, it's refreshing to have gotten my hands on a pair of Mountain Khaki Alpine Utility Shorts. This all-cotton shorts is the antithesis of that trend. There's nothing high-tech or cutting edge about it--which is exactly what a pair of heavy-duty cotton canvas shorts should be.
At first I wasn't sure what to write about these shorts. Right out of the package they were a little stiff and they seemed sort of unexciting. After wearing them for several weeks and sending them through the wash as many times, the fabric has softened up and they've become a familiar friend.
I definitely consider these shorts "outdoor wear" but wouldn't necessarily wear them for alpine pursuits as the name might imply. These are more lifestyle shorts for knocking around in the mud, climbing a tree, tuning up the bicycle, fishing a lowland stream, paddling the canoe around a lake, or having an evening campfire with friends at the beach.
Generally I like my pants and shorts to have a few small, effective pockets. What I've discovered with my Mountain Khakis Alpine Utility Shorts is that there are times that having a few extra pockets can be handy. Like the time I needed to bring a couple box-end wrenches and a screwdriver on a test ride, or the time I needed a place to put the hand pruners so I could have both hands free to climb to the next branch. Like my favorite old canvas work jacket, I have a feeling I'll be wearing this durable short for years to come.
