Oboz Firebrand : Keep Weather Out and You on the Trail
The last leaves have fallen from the vine maples and winter's stillness has descended on the forest, but the snow hasn't quite gotten hold enough to require skis, snowshoes, or other special winter equipment. Add a sunny forecast and it's the perfect weekend to go on one last mid-elevation day hike for the year. I decided to postpone the yearly transition to boots and chose to wear my Oboz Firebrand hiking shoes for this hike. I already knew from many wet autumn walks that the Firebrand would keep my feet dry (thanks to Oboz's proprietary B-Dry membrane used in the uppers, these shoes are waterproof). I also knew that the fit, which is near orthopedic, with moderate arch support, a roomy toe box, and a snug fitting heel would keep my feet comfortable and be ready to take me around the next bend all day. Since things were undoubtedly going to be wet and muddy on the trail, I wore a pair of gaiters over my Firebrands. Because the laces on this shoe go nearly down to the toe, the gaiters can hook on lower and fit better than on other trail shoes I have. This feature makes the Firebrands (and many other Oboz models) more suitable for a wide range of conditions. Another feature that makes my Firebrands stand out from other trail shoes is the firm sole. Not only does it support and move with my foot but it's also bomber enough to provide some insulation from cold ground. It's a nice bonus that adds to the shoe's versatility, especially in the shoulder seasons. Oboz offers a selection of trail ready shoes for men and women. Bottom Line : Because of some smart features and a rugged design, my Oboz Firebrand shoes will be seeing many more hikes on those days when boots are too much but other trail shoes aren't quite enough. --A.S.
