Smart Wool Merino Wool Base Layers : Wool, the Fabric of My Hikes

My Smartwool base layer tops and bottoms do an excellent job of wicking away moisture and keeping me warm. The fabric stays dry, so my skin stays drier than when I wear cotton or synthetic layers. When I'm on the final leg of a winter hike, usually facing into the wind and rain, I'm not bothered by clammy clothes or that sweaty spot I usually get under my backpack. On cold days, I stay warm, and on warmer days, I stay cool.

No Wash, and Wear, Wear, Wear

The best thing about my Smartwool tops and bottoms--they're virtually odor-free. I wear them for days in a row without washing them, which comes in handy on vacations. I can pack light, and still not offend my traveling or hiking partners.

I also appreciate Smartwool's sizing. The tops (lightweight and mid weight long sleeve half-zip top) and bottoms (lightweight and mid weight bottoms) I tested ran true to size. I like the athletic cut of the pants--a waistband that sits between the hips and waist (not too low, not too high) and long, tapered pant legs. The tops are also some of the most comfortable I've worn. The sleeves and torso length are long enough to provide full coverage for a tall person like me.

Bottom Line: The long sleeve mid-zip top looks great with jeans, too, so it's perfect for traveling when you want to look good and stay warm without packing a bulky sweater.--E .D. (April '05)

Price: $74.95 (long sleeve zip top), $59.95 (bottoms)
