Sugoi SubZero Tights : Performance Fit, Remarkable Warmth
I have nothing but good things to say about these tights. They mean it when they call them SubZero. I found them warm enough for extreme cold—whether I was cross country skiing, running, or biking (in Minnesota, I should add). But despite being so warm, they are very lightweight, and, more important, entirely non-constrictive. Cold weather tights have a tendency to be on the heavy and stiff side—not my Sugoi’s. They have an elasticity that allows for freedom of movement, no matter the rigors of the sport. Built to repel By design, the SubZero Tight is intended for cold weather biking, and they are particularly well-suited to this purpose. One of the realities of riding in a Minnesota winter is that your tires will pick up all kinds of moisture and detritus from the road and spray it all over your lower legs. I’ve used plenty of bike pants that absorb this annoying spray like a sponge. Though the SubZero Tight is not waterproof, it is obviously water repellent, far more so than any other tight I’ve used. With the SubZero Tight, road spray was kept at bay. Base layer or stand alone In the same way the SubZero repels road moisture, keeping my legs feeling dry, I also found these tights to be adept at wicking away sweat. Given this, the SubZero Tight works perfectly as a base layer when temps are in the serious negative digits. Keep in mind, though, that these are warm tights. On more than one occasion I started out using them as a base layer and was pleasantly surprised to find that my Sugoi SubZero Tights were all that was required. Bottom LIne: Great tight warm enough for extreme conditions but lightweight and elastic enough for a high performance fit—a true pleasure to wear. Water repellent fabric make them particularly well suited for sloppy winter biking while wicking action makes them a great base layer choice as well.—D.C.
