Royal Robbins Bivy Pant : Snappy Outdoor Casual
Now that spring is here I've been retiring some of my winter wardrobe to the back of the closet to make room for warm weather clothes. Doing this reminded me of that tragic day last fall when my wife re-purposed several of my favorite shorts to the rag pile. To begin my recovery from this loss I got myself a pair of Royal Robbins Bivy Shorts. I got them just in time for one of those beautiful spring weekends I dream about all winter. Our calendar was free, so the family went on a day hike. The large front pockets were plenty big for the things I wanted to keep easily accessible: a handful of kid snacks, my digital camera, and a spare pacifier. The zippered stash pocket was a secure place to store my keys and drivers license. I especially like the loose but not baggy fit of my new shorts. At trail's end, on a riverfront beach, was a van-sized rock just begging for somebody to eat lunch on top of it. A few of the footholds were quite a stretch. Many other shorts would have prevented me from making it to the top, but my Bivy Shorts with their gusseted inseam didn't compromise my range of motion at all. Since then I've worn my new shorts around town a few times and love the clean appearance and casual fit. Also available in pants. Bottom Line: I felt equally at home in my Bivy Shorts both around town and on the trail. I haven't had the opportunity yet, but because of the lightweight material, these shorts could serve double duty for a dip in a lake or river at trail's end.--A.S.
